Do women get cheaper car insurance?
The answer is no, there is now no difference between insuring male or female drivers.
It used to be the case that women could get cheaper car insurance than men, because men (especially younger ones) were more likely to be involved in accidents.
In 2012 the law changed: the European Court of Justice ruled that nobody should get cheaper car insurance based only on their gender.
An equal way
Whether you’re male or female, if you’re a safer driver, we’ll give you a competitive quote.
For example, if you’ve had car insurance and you have five years or more No Claim Discount, we can offer you a discount of 70%.
Our Car Insurance includes some extra features as standard that we think you’ll appreciate no matter what your gender.
Cover for your keys and other things
If anything gets stolen from your car we’ll cover it up to £250 including your bag and mobile, but not cash and credit cards. Outside the car, if your bag gets stolen with your car keys in it – and your car is then at risk – then we’ll pay up to £750 to replace the car’s locks and keys. We'll spare you the hassle and arrange it all too.
If you have an insured accident and your car is seriously damaged or isn’t safe to drive, then we’ll make sure you’re never stranded – someone from AXA Assistance (UK) Limited will collect you and take you and your car home, or to a garage to be repaired. We’ll also make sure you get a courtesy car whilst yours is being repaired by one of our approved repairers.
Child car seat replacement
As a parent you’d want to keep your child safe and secure. If any child seats are stolen from your car we’ll give you new ones. We’ll also replace child car seats if you have an accident, even if there’s no obvious damage to them.
Add-ons for all
You can also include some extras so your insurance does exactly what you need it to.
You could include our Motor Legal Expenses Insurance; this could cover you for losses like missed days at work, claiming the costs back from whoever caused the accident.
One of our most popular add-ons is the Enhanced Courtesy Car cover. It means that if your car is stolen and not recovered, or if it’s a write-off, the courtesy car you’ll get will be a saloon or hatchback similar to your own (maximum 1.8-litre engine). So you’ll still be able to cram in car seats and a buggy, or take the dogs to the woods.
How you might save money on your insurance
We want you to enjoy cheaper car insurance with us for as long as possible, so there are a few things you can do to make that happen.
Keeping the car off the road at night, ideally on the drive or in a garage, could make your policy cheaper.
If you drive a fast car
Faster cars generally cost more to insure, but even the same model can be in a different insurance group according to the engine size, trim and things like that. So it’s worth checking that before you buy your next car.
Check your cover
Choosing to pay a higher excess may keep your costs down too, but please be sure you won’t struggle to pay it if you have to make a claim.
Breaking down may prove expensive if you don’t include cover in your policy but before you consider buying breakdown cover with us, make sure you haven’t already got it elsewhere. You might have it as part of a bank account or a car purchase.
What about younger drivers?
Younger drivers were probably hardest-hit by the EU ruling on car insurance because everyone under 25 now has to pay more, with the careful drivers picking up the tab for the less responsible ones.
There is some good news though. If you're between 17 and 24, you could save money with our Young Driver Insurance.
We can tell if you're a safer driver by fitting a Smartbox to your car, which monitors your driving habits and how careful you are on the road. This could save you up to 20% on your annual policy – it also works the other way too, so careless driving could cost up to 20% more.
It really does pay to be a better driver.
