Dog allergies triple in a year

4th September 2015

New data from The Co-operative Insurance shows dog allergies have tripled in the last year mirroring the upward trend in human allergies.*

According to the insurer, bulldogs experienced the most problems, followed by crossbreeds and springer spaniels. The average cost of an allergy-related claim is £261.

An allergy is when exposure to a harmless substance known as an allergen causes the body’s immune system to have an adverse reaction.

Animal allergies, similar to human allergies, can range from environmental causes including grass and trees, to food allergies which can include an aversion to certain meats or wheat. Allergens can be problematic when inhaled, ingested or come into contact with an animal’s skin causing an extreme reaction.

David Hampson, Head of Pet Insurance at The Co-operative, said: “Allergies are extremely frequent during the summer and this is our busiest time for claims. While pet allergies are common, it can take time to discover what it is that is causing a reaction and treatment costs can add up if numerous vet appointments are needed. Unexpected vet bills can have a severe impact on a person’s or a family’s finances so it is wise to think about insuring your pet.”
Common pet allergies include:

  • Tree, grass and weed pollens
  • Fleas
  • Dust
  • House/dust mites
  • Dander
  • Food
  • Cleaning products
  • Feathers
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Cleaning chemicals

Common signs of dog allergies:

  • Itchy, red or scabbed skin
  • Itchy, runny eyes,
  • Spots or rashes on the skin
  • Ear infections
  • Sneezing
  • Vomiting
  • Frequent licking
