Making the transition from working in an office surrounded by colleagues, to working from home with only yourself for company, can be a big decision. Motivation can be the primary concern: if there aren’t daily or hourly targets to meet, then you may find your willpower failing.
Fortunately, there are things that you could do to make working from home just as productive, if not more so, than working from the office. Here are just a few suggestions:
Choose your working hours, and stick to them
This may be more relevant to jobs that allow you to work whenever you please, such as those with monthly deadlines to meet. You needn’t stick to the standard 9-5, but it may be a good idea if you feel this is when you are most productive.
Some people work better late at night, while others prefer to get started early in the morning. Once you find your most productive period of the day, why not set your working hours around it every day?
Get ready for work before you start
Working from home can bring up the possibility of being able to earn money in your pyjamas. This might sound fantastic in theory, but being dressed for bed could risk putting you in the wrong frame of mind for work.
If you have set your working hours for the morning, you could wake up in plenty of time to get dressed and begin work before settling down to your tasks. You may not require a sharp suit, but comfortable clothes that distinguish work time from relaxation time could help you be more productive.
Get a clear workspace
Some people think that another perk of working at home is being able to sit on the sofa with the television or radio on. In fact, for many people, this could be one of the worst things for productivity. Instead, why not make a clear distinction between home and work, setting up an office where you can spend your working hours?
If you don’t have a spare room, you could make it clear to your family that a section of the living room is reserved solely for your work station.
Take regular breaks
When working at home, particularly as a freelancer, it can be tempting to get everything you need done in one long session. However, the longer you spend on a single task, the more your productivity is likely to reduce. By scheduling breaks into your working day (maybe half an hour to one hour), you could return to your workstation with a clearer head.
